Mechanical Seals come in a wide range of designs however the most important factor when determining how long a seal is going to last, is deciding on the right seal face materials.
Selecting Your Seal Face
The materials used for your mechanical seal are dependant on the liquid that is being pumped. The first material is used on the rotating face of the mechanical seal. The second material is the stationary face of the seal. (rotating / stationary)
1.Used for clean liquids. No particles to scratch the face of the seal. Pump must always have liquid in the system before and during start-up. Failure to do so will result in failure of the mechanical seal.
Carbon/Silicon Carbide (Car/SiC):
2.Used for applications that may have a dry start-up. The pump can start without water in the pump for a few seconds. The Carbon face prevents the face of the seal from burning up during a dry start-up.
Silicon Carbide/Silicon Carbide (SiC/SiC):
Used for liquids with abrasives. Silicon Carbide is a hard surface that prevents scratching.
Pump must always have liquid in the system before and during start-up. Failure to do so will result in failure of the mechanical seal.

Aromatic fuels and solvents
Capable of handling temperatures up to 225°F
Good chemical resistance
Capable of handling temperatures up to 400°F
Used in the presence of heat or steam
Capable of handling temperatures up to 350°F
