The most reliable combination of materials is that of one seal face in graphite and the counterface in silicon carbide, tungsten carbide or ceramic. The main advantage of a graphite seal ring is its capacity to perfectly complement the counterface after a short time of operation.

* Tungsten carbide seal face: Tungsten Carbide is a versatile seal face material. It is a hard material & heavy to the touch, making it easy to distinguish from other materials. It’s ideal for high pressure application with little face distortion. It is also applied into extreme debris mechanical seal environments. With its dense construction characteristics, Tungsten Carbide will not break or crack under these severe conditions.
* Ceramic seal face: It is nearly chemically inert and costs substantially less than other materials. Ceramic performs well in many applications. Other materials should be considered for thermally variable service such as hydro-carbon process applications or where elevated temperatures tend to vaporize media.
* Carbon seal face: Carbon Graphite is a self-lubricating mechanical seal face material, generally used as a mechanical seal rotating face. It has superior wear characteristics with a broad chemical resistance. For severe applications, Antimony Filled Carbon can be applied to assist with any mechanical seal face issues. Carbon is light to the touch and black in color.
* Silicon Carbide seal face: It is a hard material and light to the touch, with a bluish color. Silicon Carbide has much better lubrication qualities than most mechanical seal face material. It offers the widest range of chemical resistance of any face material readily available today. Silicon carbide also applies in the higher temperature sealing environments. But it will crack if contacted with force or dropped.
